A feasibility study to investigate a potential community buyout of the Fortingall Hotel is now under way having received nearly unanimous local support at a first project Zoom meeting on 26 February.
The Glen Lyon and Loch Tay Community Benefit Initiative is aimed at buying the Fortingall Hotel should no acceptable commercial buyer materialise and if the owners wish to sell it to the community.
The project steering group is keeping the hotel owners updated throughout with its activities and progress.
Following an application to the Scottish Land Fund (SLF) for funds to undertake a feasibility study, the project steering group was pleased to receive an early positive response appointing an adviser who helped to complete the Phase 1 application which was submitted this week. If successful, this application will provide the funds to appoint a consultant to undertake community consultation and investigate business model options, and also to cover the costs of a valuation and survey of the hotel building. The Invitation to Tender has been issued to a number of specialists, with a view to engaging the selected consultant early in June.
“A key requirement of the SLF and other funding bodies is that we can demonstrate, through community ownership, that we are meeting community needs and providing tangible benefits – social, economic and environmental,” says project steering group chair Jenny Rees. “They will not support a commercial purchase alone whereby we are just aiming to run a profit-making hotel enterprise."
An early task for the Phase 1 consultant will be to survey the needs of the local community, across the full Glen Lyon and Loch Tay area so you will have the opportunity to express your views. Sign up to the project mailing list to ensure you are included in this process.
The ultimate objective of the three-stage feasibility study is to develop a sustainable business plan for the building, while also, critically, meeting community needs. All three stages should be completed by the autumn.
